Life Lessons From Overcoming Injury

For most of my life, I have always been extremely active, and have always identified as an athlete. I played competitive soccer for 27 years, and when I was a kid I also played ice hockey and baseball on boy’s teams. Being able to move freely and confidently has always been a huge part of my life.

When I was 28 I was in a really bad car accident, and everything changed. I spent over 5 years dealing with severe discomfort, full body issues, and a significant amount of mental, physical, and financial stress. I never thought I’d be able to work out again, or even move properly, and I never expected to get out of pain. I spent over 5 years going from doctor to doctor and did not give up until I finally found somebody who could tell me what was causing all of my symptoms, injuries, and movement deficiencies. 

Despite many low points and moments of extreme doubt, I persevered and discovered a tremendous amount about myself, and I also learned many valuable lessons. In fact, I received a forced education. This tough time was my turning point and truly made me appreciate my health, and my ability to move properly and freely more than ever. I spent most of my 20s working out solely to control my appearance. This was both soul-zapping, and not very effective. Now my focus is on making my body feel healthy and strong, excelling at all of the fundamental movements, and performing 100% of my exercises properly. In fact, once I got an actual diagnosis, I had to relearn how to move properly and basically had to start from scratch. This made using proper form more important than ever.

As I talk about all the time, and my own struggle really cemented this concept, proper form breeds top results. These results can be aesthetic, performance, or health-related in nature. I am more passionate than ever about teaching people how to perform all movements properly, progressively, and while feeling empowered and educated. In fact, this is a huge mission of Glutes, Core, and Pelvic Floor, and is the backbone of how and why we designed our program. We truly believe that working out should bring joy, confidence, and empowerment and that you should understand WHY. I wish I had learned this when I was much younger, but I truly do think that the car accident, and those 5 tough years, were a blessing in disguise. I absolutely know that I’m a much better person and coach, which is why I'm excited to pass on these lessons learned to you through this Glutes, Core and Pelvic Floor Program!
